Interview with Caitlin Kittredge and Giveaway - August 29, 2011

Please welcome to Caitlin Kittredge to The Qwillery.  Devil's Business (Black London 4) is out tomorrow.

TQ:  What would you say is your most interesting writing quirk?

Caitlin:  I need background noise. TV, music--something. If it's dead silent I get bored and unfocused very quickly.

TQ:  Are you a plotter or a pantser?

Caitlin:  Definitely a plotter. I need to know what happens next or I tend to wander off and get stuck on the draft I'm writing, which is never fun.

TQ:  What inspired you to write the Black London series?

Caitlin:  I wanted to write a series that wasn't set in the US, and it sort of grew from there.

TQ:  Describe Devil's Business in 140 characters or less.

Caitlin:  Devil's Business sees Jack and Pete trying to stop a demon with a penchant for ritual murder, and his eye on Armageddon.

TQ:  Why did you set Devil's Business in Los Angeles?

Caitlin:  I wanted to move my characters out of their comfort zone, and LA is so weird and amazing in its own right. It's tailor-made for setting a novel about trying to cause the apocalypse.

TQ:  In Devil's Business, who was the most difficult character to write and why? The easiest and why?

Caitlin:  The most difficult was the bad guy (who I can't give details about for spoiler reasons.) He's ancient evil--the primal sort of evil--but I didn't want him to be a cartoon character, because that's no fun. I wanted to give him layers and humanity, so it was hard to distill this primal force into a human looking and sounding character. The easiest was Belial, my favorite demon. He always gets the good lines.

TQ:  Who should play Pete Caldecott and Jack Winter if the books become movies?

Caitlin:  I don't know--I like David Tennant for Jack, especially after seeing him in the Fright Night remake. For Pete, I'm open to suggestions!

TQ:  Without giving anything away, what is/are your favorite scene(s) in Devil's Business?

Caitlin:  Definitely the first time Jack and the ancient evil come face to face, in the guy's creepy little lair that he's made for himself. I had a lot of fun writing it--I like atmospheric scenes.

TQ:  How many books are planned for the Black London series?

Caitlin:  At least two more! Soul Trade, the next, will be out in early 2012.

TQ:  What's next?

Caitlin:  Next, obviously, is Devil's Business. And my second YA novel, The Nightmare Garden, will be out on Valentine's Day, 2012. I'm incredibly excited about that one.
