Interview with Caitlin Kittredge and Giveaway - August 29, 2011

Please welcome to Caitlin Kittredge to The Qwillery.  Devil's Business (Black London 4) is out tomorrow.

TQ:  What would you say is your most interesting writing quirk?

Caitlin:  I need background noise. TV, music--something. If it's dead silent I get bored and unfocused very quickly.

TQ:  Are you a plotter or a pantser?

Caitlin:  Definitely a plotter. I need to know what happens next or I tend to wander off and get stuck on the draft I'm writing, which is never fun.

TQ:  What inspired you to write the Black London series?

Caitlin:  I wanted to write a series that wasn't set in the US, and it sort of grew from there.

TQ:  Describe Devil's Business in 140 characters or less.

CaitlinDevil's Business sees Jack and Pete trying to stop a demon with a penchant for ritual murder, and his eye on Armageddon.

TQ:  Why did you set Devil's Business in Los Angeles?

Caitlin:  I wanted to move my characters out of their comfort zone, and LA is so weird and amazing in its own right. It's tailor-made for setting a novel about trying to cause the apocalypse.

TQ:  In Devil's Business, who was the most difficult character to write and why? The easiest and why?

Caitlin:  The most difficult was the bad guy (who I can't give details about for spoiler reasons.) He's ancient evil--the primal sort of evil--but I didn't want him to be a cartoon character, because that's no fun. I wanted to give him layers and humanity, so it was hard to distill this primal force into a human looking and sounding character. The easiest was Belial, my favorite demon. He always gets the good lines.

TQ:  Who should play Pete Caldecott and Jack Winter if the books become movies?

Caitlin:  I don't know--I like David Tennant for Jack, especially after seeing him in the Fright Night remake. For Pete, I'm open to suggestions!

TQ:  Without giving anything away, what is/are your favorite scene(s) in Devil's Business?

Caitlin:  Definitely the first time Jack and the ancient evil come face to face, in the guy's creepy little lair that he's made for himself. I had a lot of fun writing it--I like atmospheric scenes.

TQ:  How many books are planned for the Black London series?

Caitlin:  At least two more! Soul Trade, the next, will be out in early 2012.

TQ:  What's next?

Caitlin:  Next, obviously, is Devil's Business. And my second YA novel, The Nightmare Garden, will be out on Valentine's Day, 2012. I'm incredibly excited about that one.

TQ:  Thank you for joining us at The Qwillery

Caitlin:  Thanks for having me!

About the Black London Series

Devil's Business
Black London 4
(St. Martin's, August 30, 2011)
Pete Caldecott did everything she could to save Jack from Hell, even reigning in the dark machinations of the Morrigan to help bring him home. Still, Black London has not welcomed Jack back with open arms. . . So when a friend in Los Angeles asks for help tracking a sorcerous serial killer, Pete and Jack decide a change of scenery couldn’t hurt. . .

But the shadow side of the City of Angels turns out to be more treacherous than they ever imagined. Together, Pete and Jack must navigate a landscape teeming with hostile magic-users— and fight an unknown enemy. When their investigation leads to a confrontation with the demon Belial, Jack learns that he wasn't the only thing to escape from Hell. Now it’s up to him and Pete to track and eliminate an evil older than the Black itself—before it turns L.A. into Hell on Earth. And destroys life as they know it back at home…

Bone Gods
Black London 3
(St. Martin's, November 30, 2010)
Witch hunts are on the rise and supernatural turf wars are reaching a boiling point. Then, just when it seems life couldn’t get any worse for Pete, Jack reappears—but he’s no longer the man she’s always known. Hell has changed him forever. And he’s brought back with him a whole world of trouble…

A cabal of necromancers are using ancient, unspeakable magic to turn the tide of war in their favor. Then, as the city is about to sink into chaos, Pete receives a chilling directive: To end the war, you must kill the crow-mage. Beset from all sides, Pete finds herself turning to an unholy source for help…even if doing so could destroy Black London—and life as she knew it—once and for all.

Demon Bound
Black London 2
(St. Martin's, December 1, 2009)
Thirteen years ago, Jack Winter lay dying in a graveyard. Jack called upon a demon and traded his soul for his life… and now the demon is back to collect its due. But Jack has finally found something to live for. Her name is Pete Caldecott, and because of her, Jack's not going to Hell without a fight.

Pete doesn't know about Jack's bargain, but she does know that something bigger and far more dangerous than Jack's demon is growing in the Black. Old gods are stirring and spirits are rising--and Jack doesn't stand a chance of stopping them without Pete's help.

Street Magic
Black London 1
(St. Martin's, June 2, 2009)
Her name is Pete Caldecott. She was just sixteen when she met Jack Winter, a gorgeous, larger-than-life mage who thrilled her with his witchcraft. Then a spirit Jack summoned killed him before Pete’s eyes—or so she thought. Now a detective [MSOffice2] , Pete is investigating the case of a young girl kidnapped from the streets of London. A tipster’s chilling prediction has led police directly to the child…but when Pete meets the informant, she’s shocked to learn he is none other than Jack. Strung out on heroin, Jack a shadow of his former self. But he’s able to tell Pete exactly where Bridget’s kidnappers are hiding: in the supernatural shadow-world of the fey. Even though she’s spent years disavowing the supernatural, Pete follows Jack into the invisible fey underworld, where she hopes to discover the truth about what happened to Bridget—and what happened to Jack on that dark day so long ago…

  1. May be the oddball here but I prefer epic fantasy. Epic fantasy shows the depth of an author's creative and imaginative skills.

+1 Because I'm awesome. (half kidding)

And to answer the question, hate to admit it since I've always thought myself as an Epic Fantasy guy, but can't stop reading Urban Fantasy. So Urban Fantasy.

+1 I definitely read more UF than epic fantasy. It's not that I prefer one over the other that much; I just don't have the time to devote to anything Epic recently.

  12. I would have to say Urban Fantasy is more enjoyable to me right now than Epic Fantasy. Number 1 reason? The names are pronounceable. So much Epic Fantasy has such convoluted spelling. Also, I can identify more with the settings as their worlds are so very similar to mine. I do enjoy Epic Fantasy, but do read a lot more of the Urban variety.

  28. While I still love a good epic fantasy, I'm firmly in the urban fantasy camp now. And lucky me, I keep finding more and more fabulous UF authors to add to my TBR! (You, my dear S, are a heck of an enabler! LOL!)

I've read (& enjoyed) Street Magic, so the only excuse for not having read the others has got to be my finances. Or perhaps getting sidetracked by all the new! shiny! OMG-you've-gotta-buy/read-THIS-new-author/series/book! hype that I keep falling prey to. (And see, there it is again, S: it's all your fault!)

  33. Both! I really love epic fantasy but I like to intersperse reading epic fantasy with UFs. The mostly shorter length of UFs make them a bit more of instant gratification but I don't get the same satisfaction over the course of a single book as I do with epic fantasy.

  41. When it's urban fantasy vs. epic fantasy, it all depends on the kind of mood I'm in. If I want something quick and generally stand alone, I go for UF. If I have lots of time off to enjoy a sprawling story, I for for epic.

  42. I probably haven't read enough epic fantasy to say for sure, but I'd definitely say urban fantasy. It just feels more relatable to me. The more epic fantasy books I've read, I've always had a hard time getting into because there is so much world building, often more than feels necessary. Also, it doesn't have the same feeling that it sometimes almost could happen to me. (Not that I'd want it to LOL, but you know...)

  48. This is an impossible question for me, cause I love them both to bits. My preference for the one or the other is completely dependent on my state of mind at the moment of reading. If I want something big and in-dept, I'll take an epic, but if I want something good, fast and fun, UF's my friend.
I do tend to combine both genres though, during the day I'll do some epic but when bedtime, I like to relax with some Urban.

If I do have to pick one of them, I'll be the ugly duckling and go with Epic.

Very much looking forward to reading the novels of Ms. Kittredge since they're high on my TBR-mountain!
