Interview with Kate Pearce and Giveaway - September 9, 2011

Please welcome Kate Pearce to The Qwillery.

TQ:  What would you say is your most interesting writing quirk?

Kate:  Just one? Probably that I don't write almost anything down about plot, character or setting (apart from research notes) until I get to almost the end of the book when I draw a page of notes to make sure I can get to the end without forgetting anything.

TQ:  Are you a plotter or a pantser?

Kate:  I'm definitely more on the panster side (see above) although I've been forced to become more of a plotter because I sell most books on proposal so I just have to write a good synopsis and a couple of chapters. I'd still rather just write the book.

TQ:  What inspired you to write the The Tudor Vampire Chronicles?

Kate:  This was a weird one because, knowing my historical background, my agent and an editor asked me if I could, so of course I said yes!

TQ:  What sort of research did you do to create the world in The Tudor Vampire Chronicles?

Kate:  There was a lot of research to do before I could even start writing, I have a Master degree in history, including a minor in Tudor politics and Welsh archaeology, so I had to revive those ancient skills, which was actually a lot of fun. I love research so it wasn't too much of a problem, although some days I'd spend a couple of hours looking up something like pre-Reformation church layouts and then only use a couple of descriptive sentences in the whole book.

TQ:  What is the oddest bit of information you uncovered while researching that you did not use in one of The Tudor Vampire Chronicles?

Kate:  I think my favorite bit was about the executioner called from France to cut off Anne Boleyn's head. I originally wanted to include it because he used a sword rather than an ax, which kind of fitted my decapitating a Vampire theme. But what was interesting, was that Henry had obviously already decided that Anne was going to die before her trial even began because he had to arrange for that swordsman to come over from France, (not a quick thing to do in those days), in time to be there. So much for justice.

TQ:  Describe Mark of the Rose (The Tudor Vampire Chronicles 3) in 140 characters or less.

Kate:  Oh blimey. (that doesn't count)
A pregnant, dying queen carries King Henry VIII's precious heir. Can the Tudor's loyal Vampire slayers save her life, secure the dynasty, avoid death themselves and still fall in love?

TQ:  Without giving anything away, what is/are your favorite scene(s) in Mark of the Rose?

Kate:  I love the scene when Verity Llewellyn and Rhys Williams finally get together sexually. It has this nice surreal, dreamlike feel to it. I also like the big reveal at the end, which only came to me half way through writing the book and made it immeasurably better!

TQ:  In Mark of the Rose, who was the most difficult character to write and why? The easiest and why?

Kate:  I used to think villains were always the easiest to write but this one was a bit tricky as I didn't want to give too much away. The easiest character was probably the hero, Rhys Williams because he is just such a straightforward, honorable man.

TQ:  Do you have a favorite character from The Tudor Vampire Chronicles?

Kate:  I think my favorite character of the whole series is the Vampire Elias Warner, he fascinates me.

TQ:  How many books are planned for The Tudor Vampire Chronicles?

Kate:  I planned six, one for each queen and I'm currently plotting #4. It won't be written for a while as I have a few other commitments to fulfill into next year.

TQ:  What's next?

Kate:  Next up is #7 of my 'Simply' series for Kensington Aphrodisia, Simply Carnal. This series is set in Regency England but not your usual Regency as they are erotic romances and very hot.

TQ:  Thank you for joining us at The Qwillery

Kate:  Thank you so much for having me! Great questions!

  9. I love roses they are beautiful, but to say I had one favorite would not be the case. I want the rose regardless of how beautiful or not to smell. That is the attraction of a rose for me. It makes me smile when the soft petals are fragrant and leave that subtle hint of springtime in the room. This sounds like an incredible series. I will admit I was not looking at it much, until I read more about it and now I think it is a must read. Thank you for sharing with us and for the wonderful giveaway opportunity.
