The View From Monday - February 9, 2015

Happy Monday or Happy Snow Day (if you are dealing with yet another winter storm).  There is yet again no school here today. It's Winter; snow happens. I have been catching up on TV since I've been under the weather for a while. I don't like reading when I am feeling really blah so I've watched Midsomer Murders, The Fall and am now re-watching The Invaders. The Invaders was one of my favorites when I was a kid and it's still really good. What's not to like about a show dealing with a slow invasion of Earth by aliens from a dying world?  (I really have been reading too, but you'll just have to wait for the reviews.)

There are 6 Debuts out on February 10th:

She Weeps Each Time You're Born by Quan Barry;

The Diabolical Miss Hyde (Electric Empire 1) by Viola Carr;

Finn Fancy Necromancy by Randy Henderson;

The Glittering World by Robert Levy;

Signal to Noise by Silvia Moreno- Garcia;

and

Black Dog Summer by Miranda Sherry.

From formerly featured Debut Author Challenge Authors:

The Lost Chalice (Relic Seekers 3) by Anita Clenney;

The Autumn Republic (The Powder Mage Trilogy 3) by Brian McClellan;

and

An Unwelcome Quest (Magic 2.0 # 3) by Scott Meyer.

Broken Homes
Peter Grant 4
DAW, February 4, 2014
Mass Market Paperback and eBook, 320 pages

My name is Peter Grant, and I am a keeper of the secret flame -- whatever that is.

Truth be told, there's a lot I still don't know. My superior Nightingale, previously the last of England's wizardly governmental force, is trying to teach me proper schooling for a magician's apprentice. But even he doesn't have all the answers. Mostly I'm just a constable sworn to enforce the Queen’s Peace, with the occasional help from some unusual friends and a well-placed fire blast. With the new year, I have three main objectives, a) pass the detective exam so I can officially become a DC, b) work out what the hell my relationship with Lesley Mai, an old friend from the force and now fellow apprentice, is supposed to be, and most importantly, c) get through the year without destroying a major landmark.

Two out of three isn’t bad, right?

A mutilated body in Crawley means another murderer is on the loose. The prime suspect is one Robert Weil, who may either be a common serial killer or an associate of the twisted magician known as the Faceless Man -- a man whose previous encounters I've barely survived. I've also got a case about a town planner going under a tube train and another about a stolen grimoire.

But then I get word of something very odd happening in Elephant and Castle, on a housing estate designed by a nutter, built by charlatans, and inhabited by the truly desperate. If there's a connection to the Crawley case, I'll be entering some tricky waters of juristiction with the local river spirits. We have a prickly history, to say the least.

Just the typical day for a magician constable.

Winter Magnusson is a notorious bootlegger who’s more comfortable with guns than ghosts—unfortunately for him, he’s the recent target of a malevolent hex that renders him a magnet for hauntings. After Aida’s supernatural assistance is enlisted to banish the ghosts, her spirit-chilled aura heats up as the charming bootlegger casts a different sort of spell on her...

Forced to delve deep into the mystery surrounding her own birth, she must uncover which evil spell her parents cast during her conception…and how to reverse it. And fast. As Cady and her lover Lon embark on a dangerous journey through her magical past, Lon’s teenage son, Jupe, sneaks off for his own investigation. Each family secret they uncover is darker than the last, and Cady, who has worn many identities—Moonchild, mage, fugitive—is about to add one more to the list.

The Burning Dark
Spider Wars 1
Tor Books, March 25, 2014
Hardcover and eBook, 336 pages

Adam Christopher’s dazzling first novel, Empire State, was named the Best Book of 2012 by SciFi Now magazine. Now he explores new dimensions of time and space in The Burning Dark.

Back in the day, Captain Abraham Idaho Cleveland had led the Fleet into battle against an implacable machine intelligence capable of devouring entire worlds. But after saving a planet, and getting a bum robot knee in the process, he finds himself relegated to one of the most remote backwaters in Fleetspace to oversee the decommissioning of a semi-deserted space station well past its use-by date.

But all is not well aboard the U-Star Coast City. The station’s reclusive Commandant is nowhere to be seen, leaving Cleveland to deal with a hostile crew on his own. Persistent malfunctions plague the station’s systems while interference from a toxic purple star makes even ordinary communications problematic. Alien shadows and whispers seem to haunt the lonely corridors and airlocks, fraying the nerves of everyone aboard.

Isolated and friendless, Cleveland reaches out to the universe via an old-fashioned space radio, only to tune in to a strange, enigmatic signal: a woman’s voice that seems to echo across a thousand light-years of space. But is the transmission just a random bit of static from the past—or a warning of an undying menace beyond mortal comprehension?

Interview with Anita Clenney, author of the Relic Seekers and Connor Clan Novels - October 23, 2013

Please welcome Anita Clenney to The Qwillery. Anita is the author of the Relic Seeker and Connor Clan novels. Her most recent novel is Fountain of Secrets (Relic Seekers 2).

TQ:  Welcome back to The Qwillery! Please tell us something about your newest series, the Relic Seekers, that we won't find in the book descriptions.

Anita:  Hi! It’s great to be back. Hmmm, something you haven’t heard…There are lots of secrets yet to be uncovered in this series, but I think the readers know that. What they might not realize is how closely the past and the future are connected. It might even require some time travel to sort out!

TQ:  What sorts of research have you done for the Relics Seekers series and what is the oddest thing you've found so far?

Anita:  I did research on the relics, and for Fountain of Secrets, I researched King Arthur and the Fountain of Youth. This was the most fun I’ve ever had doing research. It would take an entire page to explain the way I stumbled onto the location for Fountain of Secrets. It was just remarkable. The oddest thing I found was that so many beliefs and myths are centered in this one place, Glastonbury, England. From Christ to King Arthur to fairies. It was just fascinating.

TQ:  Which character has surprised you the most?

Anita:  I think all three. There are so many layers to these characters. Kendall surprised me with her secret power where she can throw things around. Namely the Reaper. Nathan surprised me with his tattoo and his tougher side, and Jake surprised me with his depth for feeling. The next book will reveal some real humdingers in Jake’s past.

TQ:  What's next for the Relic Seekers series and any chance we'll be seeing any more from the Conner Clan?

Anita:  Next in the Relic Seekers is The Lost Chalice. Kendall, Nathan and Jake continue their quest for the four relics, and this search is for the Holy Grail. They must find it before the Reaper does. He needs it so he can drink from the Fountain of Youth, which will give him tremendous power. Their search will be hampered when the characters discover how intertwined their pasts are.

Yes, the Connor Clan is alive and well and still battling demons and vampires. Heart of the Highland Warrior is the next full length novel. (We changed the title from Unleash the Highland Warrior). All the warriors are up to their kilts in demons and then some. Lots of surprises, suspense, action and fun. The clan is going to be stunned when the hero makes his appearance, and the heroine has some surprises in store. Some of them quite ugly. I do love surprises if you haven’t noticed! It’ll be out this spring. I’ll release one or two novellas in the series later this year. Angus: A Highland Warrior Brief should be out in November or December. It will lead up to Heart of the Highland Warrior.

TQ:  Thank you for joining us at The Qwillery.

Relic Seekers

Fountain of Secrets
Relic Seekers 2
Montlake Romance, September 10, 2013
Trade Paperback and Kindle eBook, 339 pages

A relics expert with a nose for mystery is torn between her sexy billionaire boss and her hot bodyguard. Each would die to save her...and win her heart.

Kendall Morgan puts her sixth sense back to work in the second book of the Relic Seekers series, divining the history and location of ancient relics. Her boss, the gorgeous billionaire Nathan Larraby, sends her to Italy to safeguard a priceless treasure belonging to the Protettori, an ancient order of monks who guard four powerful relics that Nathan believes may be the cure for his dark curse. He also sends brooding mercenary Jake Stone to watch Kendall’s back—although her back isn’t all Jake has his eye on.

Nathan joins them, and all three tumble into a labyrinth of defenses created by the monks to protect their treasures, including the Fountain of Youth. They find themselves in England on the trail of the legendary King Arthur, who along with the Reaper, seems mysteriously connected to the Protettori. Winners x 12 - November 14, 2011

I'm a bit behind on announcing winners and getting out winnings. We had a family emergency (all is well now, I think) and then lost power for over a week in the great Autumn Nor'Easter that hit on October 29th. I'm behind, but I will catch up. So without further ado, excuses, or explanations... the winners are:

The Shadow Reader (McKenzie Lewis 1) by Sandy Williams

Question: What is your favorite soda or other beverage?

Kristina who said...

Shadow Reader looks like it is going to be an awesome read! Definately going on my TBR list!

*my favorite soda is Coke...just like the refreshing taste and the fact that I can leave it out for a few hours and its not flat at all!

Dark Sins and Desert Sands (Mythica) by Stephanie Draven

Question:  Do you have a favorite myth?

Scorpio1974 who said...

Well I love pretty much all things paranormal and supernatural so I like a lot of the myths surrounding those things like vampires, were-animals, zombies and such. I also like the greek and roman myths about the gods and goddesses.

and

Patsy who said...

My favorite myth is the City/Island of Atlantis. I am truely fascinated by it!

A Novel Seduction by Gwyn Cready

Question:  Hero in a tuxedo or hero in a kilt?

Jary who said...

What can be better than a man in a kilt? Especially if he is bare chested. YUM!!

The books looks great. You are a new author for me but definitely going on my TOB list.

Mirror Maze by Michaela Jordan

Question:  Have you ever been in a maze and where?

erin who said...

Thanks for a great interview! I hadn't encountered this book before and it sounds great!

I've only been in a maze once and it was a corn maze attached to a haunted house. Of course, we went at night and it seemed like it took us forever to find our way out. Don't know if I'd do it again, but it was scary!

Beauty Dates the Beast (Midnight Liaisons 1) by Jessica Sims

Question:  Who or What is your perfect paranormal date?

Sheree who said...

Hm, it's either going to be a flying shifter of some sort or an angel. We might as well fly to our date destinations without dealing with airplanes.

The Vengeful Dead (Deadworld 2) by J.N. Duncan and cover flat for The Lingering Dead (Deadworld 3)

Question:  Leave a comment about J.N. Duncan's post.

Bethany C. who said...

I like how you described your writing process. It sounds like how I would go about it if I were to ever start writing a book/series.

Swell by Corwin Ericson

Question:  What is your favorite kind of whale?

msmjb65 who said...

The answer to the question is easy: the humpback whale. I have always been intrigued by this mammouth of the sea. It's just so amazing when you see one breach - that it can get itself out of the water like that is nature at its best.
I have yet to be in the right place at the right time to go whale watching, but one day I'll get to see one in person. Swell looks really interesting and different - I love different!
Congrats on the release..

Who Do, Voodoo? (A Mind for Mysteries 1) by Rochelle Staab

Question:  Tarot Cards or Palm Reading?

samantha35 who said...

I love the idea of palm reading- seems more personal!

Awaken the Highland Warrior and Embrace the Highland Warrior by Anita Clenney

Question:  Who is your favorite writer and why?

Laura_darkelvengirl who said...

Who's my favorite writer?
Easy yet hard I have to say these people. Nalini Singh, Alexandra Ivy, and Kerrelyn Sparks. The reason I would say these are my favorite writers are that they deliver stories that leave me loving them, and wanting more.

Question:  Which goddess or god would you be (if you could be a goddess or god)?

latishajean who said...

Prize pack, including a signed copy of Under Attack (The Underworld Detection Agency Chronicles 2) by Hannah Jayne

Question:  What job would you do if you could do anything?

Teril who said...

Well for starters if I could do anything, it would be find teleportation and make it free because I am tired of sitting in traffic. That and driving in the snow. So teleportation it is. That and becoming a shifter, since then I could be moody and hawt!

Under Wraps was an amazing novel I love the heroine and the setting! I cannot wait to read Under Attack. Thank you for the giveaway.

Interview with Anita Clenney and Giveaway - November 2, 2011

Anita Clenney first visited The Qwillery as part of the 2011 Debut Author Challenge and now returns as both a New York Times and USA Today Best Selling Author! Congratulations to Anita and welcome back. Anita's most recent book, Embrace the Highland Warrior, was published yesterday.

TQ:  Welcome back to The Qwillery!

Anita:  Thanks for having me back. I’m thrilled to be here. And I’m celebrating!! Not only did Embrace the Highland Warrior come out yesterday, but I learned that I actually made the NYT best seller list for ebooks in September and I had no idea until my agent stumbled on it. We knew I had hit the USA Today best seller list, but this was a surprise.

TQ:  Please tell us about Embrace the Highland Warrior, the second novel in your highlander series. Does the series have a name now?

Anita:  My publisher didn’t give the series a name, but I’ve noticed that reviewers are calling it The Connor Clan series. It’s full of poignant love, betrayal, and loaded with suspense. Here’s a blurb:

Cody McBain and his family spent years protecting the identity of a powerful female warrior who was targeted by an ancient demon, keeping the secret from even her. When she found out her entire life had been a lie, she abandoned Cody and her clan. Now, vampires and demons have discovered she's alive and are in a race to find her and the clan's sacred Book of Battles. Cody will have to break all the rules to save the woman who shattered his heart.

When the powerful demon who left Shay for dead discovers her empty grave, he comes seeking retribution, believing she possesses an ancient book he has sought for centuries. But the vampires also want the book, and they want her. Knowing she can’t fight this evil alone, Shay returns to her clan and the Scottish Warrior who betrayed her…the only man she’s ever loved, where she discovers that betrayal isn’t always what it seems. Sometimes it’s far worse.

TQ:  Which character has surprised you the most in the series?

Anita:  Ronan surprised me. He started as a very minor secondary character, and he just exploded on the page. His dialog came without me even trying; witty, natural, and his relationship with Bree just flowed. Now he’s the character EVERYONE wants to know about.

TQ:  Scottish Highlanders - what makes them so attractive?

Anita:  I can’t figure it out, either. I think in reality Scottish Highlanders are like any other segment of the population. There are good and bad, gorgeous and not gorgeous, but when it comes to books and our imagination, for women, there’s something about a man in a kilt that is magic. I’m still trying to get my husband in one. Seriously, I do think that throughout history, highlanders were depicted as so passionate and fierce, and that’s a characteristic we like in our heroes.

TQ:  What do you wish you'd known when the 1st book, Awaken the Highland Warrior, was published that you know now?

Anita:  I wish I had realized how busy I would be with writing and promoting. After publication, it gets crazy. I should have planned my time better.

TQ:  Describe a typical writing day for you.

Anita:  My days vary. Sometimes I do most of my writing in the evening or at night, which means I might have to nap or sleep during the day. I’m really bad about structure.

TQ:  Are there any other genres in which you would like to write in addition to paranormal romance and romantic suspense?

Anita:  I have a cozy mystery on the backburner. I love any combination of mysteries and romance.

TQ:  What's next?

Anita:  I’m working on book three in the series, Unleash the Highland Warrior, and also another paranormal romantic suspense, but no warriors this time.

TQ:  Thank you for joining us at The Qwillery.

Anita:  Thanks for having me. I love connecting with readers.

An excerpt from Embrace the Highland Warrior

Cody sighed. Might as well get it over with. He removed the shackles, returned them, and bent over her. “Shay, wake up.”
Her eyes flew open. She planted both hands against his chest and shoved, knocking him on his back, then sprang on top of him. “How dare you handcuff me to a bed?” she yelled, punctuating each word with a shake that rattled his brain. He didn’t fight back. She had to get it out of her system, and he didn’t blame her. He’d be more than pissed if someone shackled him.
She landed a fist into his stomach, and the breath rushed out of him. Okay, enough was enough. He captured her hands and rolled, trapping her under him.
          “Get off me, you oaf.”
“I’ll get off when you stop beating the snot out of me.”
She let out a war cry and lunged for his throat, teeth bared. Intrigued, he hesitated a second too long, and she sank her teeth into his neck. A jolt of desire shot straight to his groin. He’d never been one for the rough stuff, but damn! He pulled back before she could do more than leave a bruise. He trapped her legs with his and held her hands above her head, letting his full weight press her into the soft mattress. She still struggled but could move only enough to get him excited.
“I’m sorry, Shay. I had to do it. It was too dangerous to let you go traipsing through the woods. I had to keep you safe.”
“What if he was hiding in one of the other bedrooms and sneaked in here while I was handcuffed to the bed? You left me so I couldn’t even protect myself.”
“Lach heard him out in the woods, but that’s why I locked the door, just in case. If this guy had broken it down to get to you, you would’ve screamed, and I would’ve come running. I was never far from the house.” He’d heard every name she called him.
Her eyes still flashed fire, but her breath was steadier, and she kept glancing at his mouth. He thought that was a good thing. He wondered if she’d calmed enough not to hit him, because he should move. She had to notice the effect all the wiggling around was having on him. He felt her hips push against his, and he groaned. He relaxed his grip and lowered his head, letting his lips touch her chin. He kissed his way to her mouth, and she head butted him in the nose.
While the stars exploded in his head, she shoved him aside and bolted out the door. He jumped up and went after her as she pounded down the stairs. He caught up with her outside. She was swinging her purse like a whip, headed for the car.
“Where are you going?” he demanded.
          “Get away from me.”
          “You can’t leave.”
“Watch me.” She opened the door. “I’m tired of people hiding things from me. I thought you were going to stop. Now you’re handcuffing me to the bed.”
          “I explained it to you.”
“Don’t touch me,” she said, jerking away when he grabbed her arm.
          “You’re not leaving.”
Shay straightened her shoulders. “You can’t stop me.”
He grabbed her, tossed her over his shoulder, kicked the car door shut, and stomped up the steps.
“Put me down!” Shay kicked and twisted, cursing at him. He dumped her on her feet inside the door.
She blew her hair out of her face, and as soon as she could see, she threw a punch at his chin. He deflected it and grabbed her arm. “Stop hitting me.”
“How dare you throw me over your shoulder like some kind of caveman,” she spat, trying to wrench her arm free. It didn’t work, so she used her knee.
“Ah, not there.” Cody trapped her knee. “I made the mistake of letting you leave here nine years ago without listening to me. By God, I won’t do it again. You’ll listen if I have to sit on you,” he growled.
She drew back her other arm, and before she could throw the punch, he had her on the floor and was sitting astride her, pinning her wrists to the floor. She bucked and twisted, but he held her down. “We can do this all night if you want, but you’re going to listen to me this time.”
“Listen to more lies? You’re still hiding things from me. Like the fact that you have Nina’s entire house under surveillance. Like the fact that you’ve got a Bat Cave in your basement. Like the fact that you were in Scotland when the stalking started.”
“You think I’m your stalker?” he yelled. “Me! I’m trying to keep you alive. We’re all trying to keep you alive. That’s what the clan’s been doing your whole damned life, trying to keep you alive! And just like always, you’re making it hard as hell. Your father wasn’t a bloody spy, and that thing in your living room wasn’t a man!”
