A Vampire For Christmas Blog Tour - October 19, 2011

Thanks, Sally, for hosting the #VampXmas blog tour! It’s always fun to visit with you and your readers.

The anthology, A VAMPIRE FOR CHRISTMAS, was just released in print (November 1 for digital), and all four authors are here today, answering the same question. Stay tuned at the end for a chance to win a cool prize package.

What surprised you most about writing your short story in the anthology A VAMPIRE FOR CHRISTMAS?

Michele Hauf: That much as I hate living in Minnesota and complain about the weather and the unending snow, I really enjoy writing about it. Set in NY, this story has snowstorms, and cold, icy weather, and it's fun to play with on the page. Especially since cold weather demands cuddling. ;-)

Alexis Morgan: I think what surprised me the most was how clearly I could see the opening scene long before I knew anything at all about the characters or how the story would unfold. As soon as I thought about a the idea of a vampire celebrating Christmas, I could just “see” him standing across the street from a diner and staring at the woman behind the counter. That image raised so many questions for me. Why was he out there? Why didn’t he come in out of the cold? What about him made the heroine so painfully aware of him standing out there when the street outside was crowded with holiday shoppers? I quickly realized that it wasn’t the chill of a winter night that left Eagan McHale feeling so cold, but the emotional price that came from living the secret life of a vampire and cop. It wasn’t the cozy comfort of diner itself that Eagan needed that night, but the gift of loving acceptance he found in Della’s dark chocolate eyes and sweet smile.

Laurie London: What surprised me about writing this story was the way the Christmas theme jump-started the conflict. In the Sweetblood world, vampires don’t fear holy water or crosses…or even churches, for that matter, so I knew some other conflict would drive the story. When I saw a raven-haired woman arranging greenery and Christmas candles on a mantle, with an angry, yet gorgeous, man watching her, it hit me. Not only does Charlotte Grant not realize she’s decorating a vampire’s mansion for a big holiday party, but she’s done it before. Something terrible happened last year, and Trace is not happy she’s back.

Caridad Pineiro: What surprised me most was a turn that the story took which departed from the traditional Dickens tale. Although I had already deviated a bit from the original story line in that my “ghost” is an angel and makes repeat visits, the real surprise was when it occurred to me that it wasn’t only the vampire who had to be redeemed, but the heroine as well. Part of the reason for her return visits to the vampire is that she has not yet learned her lesson either.
