Melanie's Week in Review - March 9, 2014

This was a good news, bad news kind of week on the reading front. I read one mega, fantastic book, 1 extremely dull book (it will be clear soon), and had 2 DNFs. So what did I read?

The mega fantastic read I started with was the third book of the Ministry of Peculiar Occurrences - Dawn's Early Light by Philippa Ballantine and Tee Morris. I LOVE this series (you may have guessed from my gushing about it in last week's WIR) and I think after book 3 I love it even more. I will be writing a full review so I can't say anything else.

You may remember my WIR a few weeks ago when I had a 'love in' with the 'love in' genre - PNR?  Well I didn't have such good luck this week in fact I had 2 DNFs. I tried to read Wild Fever by Donna Grant which was the first in the Chaisson series. This book broke one of my PNR rules with the hero and heroine jumping in bed within the first 2-3 chapters and in the middle of a life or death situation. For me, that just takes the 'R' out of PNR. The second one was Born in Blood by Alexandra Ivy. Again the romance was missing in this novel. If only Ivy had kept the tension building between her two lead characters for a few more chapters then it could have hit 'the spot'.

However, what I spent the most of the week reading was the Life in the United Kingdom' test book. Bet you didn't see that coming? Despite the fact I have lived in the UK for almost 20 years I have never bothered to get a British passport. As I was studying for the exam I kept wishing I could be reading almost anything else (apart from the above mentioned DNFs!). If you need to know any interesting facts like what happened in 1066, what was Charlie Chaplin most famous for playing or the words to God Save the Queen, just let me know! If anyone wants to know I passed the test (hurrah) and now its just another 9-12 months and £1000 and I might just end up with a British passport.

With that test under my belt I can now go back to reading books I want to read. Until next week Happy Reading.

And the winners are....

Winner's Choice of one of Lisa Renee Jones' Zodius Novels - Ended May 20, 2012 - Read Guest Blog here.

Question:   Who is your ideal paranormal hero?

Amber Hughes who said...

One of my favorite paranormal heroes is "Zsadist" from J.R. Ward's Black Dagger Brotherhood series. His past is so tragic, but when he meets his mate, the healing finally begins. He'll never be perfect, but comes along way in recovering from such a tortured/tragic past.

This was a great post! Thanks very much for the giveaway! Lisa's books are definitely my kind of read :-)

Digital Copy of Mythic by Jae Lynne Davies - Ended May 21, 2012 - Read the Interview here.

My Lord Vampire (Immortal Rogues 1) by Alexandra Ivy - Ended May 23, 2012 - Read the interview here.

Question:  If you are immortal, when were you created or born?

MamaKitty who said...

How funny - when I'm writing, I tend to go over a scene like a movie clip in my mind as well. I didn't think I was the only person that did that, but it always makes me laugh a little bit when someone else admits it. I don't know why. Maybe because I'm not the only crazy one? :)

If I were an immortal, I think I would have been born back in ancient Egypt. I've always been utterly fascinated with that time period - far more than I probably should be.

Choice of Roil (The Nightbound Land 1) or Night's Engines (The Nightbound Land 2) by Trent Jamieson - Ended May 24, 2012 - Read the interview here.

Question:  What is the most recent Fantasy (Epic, High, Urban, etc.) book you've read?

Wrayth Lethe who said...

recently finished re-reading the Trickster series by Rob Thurman :)

Guardian of the Night (Vampire Moons 4) by Linda Thomas-Sundstrom - Ended May 25, 2012 - Read the interview here.

marybelle who said...

Queen Victoria would make a scary vampire.

Authors After Dark Author Spotlight Interview - Alexandra Ivy

Please welcome Alexandra Ivy to The Qwillery's as part of the Authors After Dark Author Spotlight Interviews.

TQ:  What inspired you to become a writer?

Alexandra:  I actually came to writing from my love for theatre. I’ve always been a huge reader, but when I was younger I hoped to work on stage. After taking a playwriting class I realized I actually preferred to create my own characters rather than mimicking someone else’s. I worked on a play (that I would still love to finish), but my heart has always belonged to romance, so I swiftly turned my efforts to novels.

TQ:  What is the most challenging thing for you about writing?

Alexandra:  I have a very vivid idea for each scene and it runs through my mind like a movie clip, but getting it from my head and onto the paper into words that capture my idea is always tough. I also have a habit of changing my mind about the ending of the story about three quarters of the way through a book, so I have to go back through and make sure it all makes sense :-)  The one thing that’s never tough is getting new ideas. I only wish I had more time!

TQ:  What writing achievement are you most proud of?

Alexandra:  I know it’s cliché, but hitting the New Times bestseller list will always be one of my greatest moments. It took me years to finally get published and even after I had several books in print I still felt like a fraud :-) As if someone might suddenly realize that I shouldn’t be published. So hitting the list felt like a confirmation that it hadn’t all been some huge mistake!

TQ:  What one thing should everyone know about your writing?

Alexandra:  That I write my books in play format…which means that I write all the dialogue first with a few stage directions. I don’t know if it’s because I started writing plays first, but it’s the way I make sure that the characters always move the story forward and don’t become overwhelmed by the details and descriptions.

TQ:  Please tell us about your latest and upcoming works.

Alexandra:  My next book in the Guardians of Eternity series will be FEAR THE DARKNESS in Sept. This is Caine and Cassie’s story and for those who’ve followed the series it has a HUGE turning point!! After that will be Santiago and Nefri’s story (June 2013).

Kensington is also reprinting my vampire trilogy that I wrote under the name Debbie Raleigh. The Immortal Rogues, starting with MY LORD VAMPIRE (Feb. 28th) are regency historicals that are set in the early 1800s London England. They’re ‘sweeter’ than my current series (less sex and violence :-) ) but I do have a character in my current series that makes an appearance in my earlier books. It’s soooo much fun to write about immortals!

TQ:  Thank you for joining us at The Qwillery.

Alexandra:  Thanks so much for inviting me!!
