Interview with Tammy Falkner and Giveaway - January 16, 2014

Please welcome Tammy Falkner to The Qwillery. Tammy's most recent novel is The Magic Between Us (Faerie 3), which was published on January 7, 2014.

TQ:  Welcome back to The Qwillery.

Tammy:  Thanks so much for having me!

TQ:  You've written 3 Faerie novels and several other novels (so far). What is the most challenging thing for you about writing? Has your writing process changed over the years?

Tammy:  When I first started writing, I was writing as part of the Lydia Dare team with Ava Stone. We wrote five pages at a time, swapping the story after about a chapter. So, my process is definitely different writing solo! There’s no one waiting for me to send pages, so I tend to write much slower. Keeping a quick pace is a serious challenge for me, much more so than it used to be.

TQ:  What inspired you to write the Faerie series?

Tammy:  I had already written vampyres and Lycans in Regency England, and I started to think about all the other beings that might live and interact with the Ton. So, I thought of faeries. They fit, so I wrote it.

TQ:   Tell us something about The Magic Between Us (Faerie 3) that is not in the book description.

Tammy:  There are two interesting sub-romances in this book. One is Marcus’s human half-brother and a faerie. And the other is Ronald, the garden gnome. I had a lot of fun with these romances and enjoyed tying them into the series.

TQ:  Which character in the Faerie series so far has surprised you the most?

Tammy:  Honestly, it was Mayden. I don’t believe that people are born bad in many situations. There’s always some underlying pain, fear or other history that makes people who they are when they do things to cause other people harm. I went through all three books not knowing what Mayden’s history was. I only knew that he was bad. Then I dreamed that last scene in The Magic Between Us and finally figured out what made him tick. He surprised me more than anyone when I realized what he’d been through.

TQ:  If you could, would you travel to the land of the Fae? Why or why not?

Tammy:  Most definitely. I would travel anywhere! The fae world is Regency England with magic! Of course I would go there!

TQ:  In your opinion, does a Romance novel always have to have an HEA?

Tammy:  Yes, for me to enjoy it, it does. I need an underlying feeling of happiness or closure. I don’t want to read and hope for happiness and then there not be one.

TQ:   What's next?

Tammy:   Next up for me is another New Adult novel. It’s the fourth book in my Reed Brothers series and I’m really excited about it!

TQ:  Thank you for joining us at The Qwillery.

Tammy:   Thanks so much for having me!

Guest Blog by Tammy Falkner and Giveaway - June 7, 2013

Please welcome Tammy Falkner to The Qwillery. The Magic of "I Do", the second novel in the Fae series, was published on June 4, 2013.

As a writer, I am commonly asked questions about my writing rituals. Do I have a soundtrack for my books? Do I have a special place where I write? Do I have a special coffee blend that keeps me feeling inspired? The answer is really no. I need three things in order to write -
  1. Quiet
  2. No internet
  3. To put my butt in the chair and get it done.
Number three is more important than the first two. I’d like all three, but I don’t often get all three.

Number one: My husband is really good at providing the quiet when he’s at home. I hear him often say “Mommy’s writing a book. Let’s leave her alone.” Or “Mommy’s busy. Let’s don’t talk to her right now.” Or my teenager says to my nine-year-old, “I’ll make your freaking sandwich.” Ok, so he’s not quite as good at running interference. But husband is really good at it. He’s also really good at getting me back on track. (See number two above.) I don’t know if every writer experiences this, but I get ideas all the time for new stories. I sometimes post about them on Facebook. And they come to me a lot when I’m on deadline. A few second after my Facebook post, I’ll get a text like this:

See what I mean? It’s annoying as all get out at the time it happens, but then I meet my deadline and I have to give him a little bit of credit. (He would take all the credit if I let him.)

Oh, wait. He did take all the credit one time. Here’s a little sidebar: He has a t-shirt that has a cover of my book on it, and it says, “I’m married to the author. And I inspired pages 321-333.” (Those pages just happen to be a passionate love scene.) He wears it to the grocery store. So, not only is he wearing a shirt with a passionate love scene cover and page numbers, and usually a naked man-chest, he’s also talking with people from church, scouting, and others from our community while wearing it. And he never blinks an eye over it. He just wears it proudly.

Back to what I need in order to write - we’ve talked about my need for quiet, and no distractions like the internet. But in the end, the only thing I really need is to put my butt in the chair and get it done. I can’t write while I play on Facebook. I can’t write while I dream up my next story. I can’t write while people talk to me. I can’t write unless I put my butt in the chair and write. Seems easy, doesn’t it? It’s not. It’s sometimes a struggle to just make it happen. But every time I do, I’m really happy with the results. And I hope you will be too!

How about you? Do you ever procrastinate?

Interview with Tammy Falkner, author of A Lady and Her Magic - September 19, 2012

Please welcome Tammy Falkner to The Qwillery. A Lady and Her Magic was published on September 1, 2012 by Sourcebooks.

TQ:  Welcome to The Qwillery!

Tammy:  Thanks for having me!

TQ:  What would you say is your most interesting writing quirk?

Tammy:  I see books in scenes, kind of like scenes in a movie. And I can’t sit down to write a scene until I have the whole scene in my head. Then I write, and I wait to “see” the next scene. The hardest books for me to write are the ones where I can see the scenes that come 40 pages after the one I’m on!

TQ:  Are you a plotter or a pantser?

Tammy:  A little bit of both, actually. I have to know the characters’ motivation, as well as have some key plot points before I can even begin to write. But, sometimes, as those scenes come to me, there are some odd things that come to me, too. So, at that point, I’m a bit of a pantser. I’d say I’m a mix between the two!

TQ:  What is the most challenging thing for you about writing?

Tammy:  Right now, finding time to write is the hardest part. I have double contracts going on as both myself and Lydia Dare, still work full time and have a family that needs me to come out of my cave on special occasions.

TQ:  What inspired you to write A Lady and Her Magic?

Tammy:  As Lydia Dare, my writing partner and I had dropped Lycans, vampyres and witches into Regency England. And I started to think about what other beings might live and interact with the British ton. Faeries have about as many rules as the aristocracy, so it seemed interesting to place them in Regency England as well.

TQ:  What sort of research did you do for A Lady and Her Magic?

Tammy:  Most of my research revolved around historical accuracy, actually. What fish would be in a water feature in Regency England? Would they be called carp or coy at that time in history? What card games were popular? What items might little girls covet? But then add to that looking up mythology and lore. It was actually a lot of fun finding out all I could about faeries, which are a myth by design, but apparently have their own culture.

TQ:  Tell us something about A Lady and Her Magic that is not in the book description.

Tammy:  When I originally wrote it, Sophia was entranced by all music, and not just by Ashley’s or her mother’s. Then it came to me that each of the three Thorne children were left with a token by their parents. Her love of music was a token left by her mother, so that she could recognize the song of a loved one if she ever stumbled upon them later in life. Little does her mother know that she would recognize the Duke of Robinsworth’s song as that of a loved one. I liked that twist. And there’s an even bigger twist like that in the next book, THE MAGIC OF I DO, when we find out what token was left with Claire.

TQ:  Why do you think that Regency Romance and fantasy blend so well?

Tammy:  Both the Regency and the fae world are built upon rules. They are unbreakable in most cases, or there are consequences. The fact that Sophia is fae is one more reason why they can’t be together. And her lack of social graces and his being boosted from society adds to the tension, a little. I think that it all blended perfectly, but I may be a little biased.

TQ:  Who was the easiest character to write and why? Hardest and why?

Tammy:  Ashley Trimble, the duke of Robinsworth, was the easiest character to write. He was a bit broken in the beginning, and I love a wounded hero. The hardest was Ronald (a gnome), actually. He had a tendency to steal the scene and take the focus off the characters. But he was so much fun that he had to have a part in the book.

TQ:  Without giving anything away, what is/are your favorite scene(s) in A Lady and Her Magic?

Tammy:  My favorite scenes are the ones where they’re alone late at night and his music calls to her. I think you get an unbiased view of how they feel about one another, and it’s the only time you do get that view all the way up to the end of the book.

TQ:  What's next?

Tammy:  Next up, I have a release writing as Lydia Dare called WOLFISHLY YOURS in November of 2012. Then THE MAGIC OF I DO by Tammy Falkner in June of 2013.

TQ:  Thank you for joining us at The Qwillery.

Tammy:  Thanks for having me and for giving me such thoughtful questions to answer!
