Failed State
Dystopian Lawyer
Harper Voyager, August 11, 2020
Trade Paperback and eBook, 384 pages
"The novel is as tense and thrilling as any of Brown's work, and as full of rage and hope. It's a novel that truly reckons with the enormity of both our climate emergency and the system that produced it - a tale of human imperfection and redemption." -- Cory Doctorow, bestselling author of Walkaway

In this second dystopian legal thriller from the author of the acclaimed Rule of Capture and Tropic of Kansas, lawyer Donny Kimoe juggles two intertwined cases whose outcomes will determine the course of America’s future—and his own.

In the aftermath of a second American revolution, peace rests on a fragile truce. The old regime has been deposed, but the ex-president has vanished, escaping justice for his crimes. Some believe he is dead. Others fear he is in hiding, gathering forces. As the factions in Washington work to restore order, Donny Kimoe is in court to settle old scores—and pay his own debts come due.

Meanwhile, the rebels Donny once defended are exacting their own kind of justice. In the ruins of New Orleans, they are building a green utopia—and kidnapping their defeated adversaries to pay for it. The newest hostage is the young heiress to a fortune made from plundering the country—and the daughter of one of Donny’s oldest friends. In a desperate gambit to save his own skin, Donny switches sides to defend her before the show trial. If he fails, so will the truce, dragging the country back into violence. But by taking the case, he risks his last chance to expose the atrocities of the dictatorship—and being tried for his own crimes against the revolution.

To save the future, Donny has to gamble his own. The only way out is to find the evidence that will get both sides back to the table, and secure a more lasting peace. To do that, Donny must betray his clients’ secrets. Including one explosive secret hidden in the ruins, the discovery of which could extinguish the last hope for a better tomorrow—or, if Donny plays it right, keep it burning.

Trade Paperback and eBook, 320 pages
2021 Philip K. Dick Award Finalist
A 2020 The Rumpus Book Club Selection

“Blends a rural thriller and speculative realism into what could be called dystopian noir…. Profoundly moving.”—Library Journal, starred review

In an endless winter, she carries seeds of hope

Wylodine comes from a world of paranoia and poverty—her family grows marijuana illegally, and life has always been a battle. Now she’s been left behind to tend the crop alone. Then spring doesn’t return for the second year in a row, bringing unprecedented, extreme winter.

With grow lights stashed in her truck and a pouch of precious seeds, she begins a journey, determined to start over away from Appalachian Ohio. But the icy roads and strangers hidden in the hills are treacherous. After a harrowing encounter with a violent cult, Wil and her small group of exiles become a target for the cult’s volatile leader. Because she has the most valuable skill in the climate chaos: she can make things grow.

Urgent and poignant, Road Out of Winter is a glimpse of an all-too-possible near future, with a chosen family forged in the face of dystopian collapse. With the gripping suspense of The Road and the lyricism of Station Eleven, Stine’s vision is of a changing world where an unexpected hero searches for where hope might take root.

“Richly imagined, deeply moving and unthinkably offers hope in a world that uncannily resembles ours currently in the thick of COVID-19…. Gloriously well-written.” —Ms. Magazine

The Doors of Eden
Orbit, Sebtember 22, 2020
Trade Paperback and eBook, 640 pages
From the Arthur C. Clarke Award-winning Adrian Tchaikovsky, The Doors of Eden is an extraordinary feat of the imagination and a page-turning adventure about parallel universes and the monsters that they hide.

They thought we were safe. They were wrong.

Four years ago, two girls went looking for monsters on Bodmin Moor. Only one came back.

Lee thought she’d lost Mal, but now she’s miraculously returned. But what happened that day on the moors? And where has she been all this time? Mal’s reappearance hasn’t gone unnoticed by MI5 officers either, and Lee isn’t the only one with questions.

Julian Sabreur is investigating an attack on top physicist Kay Amal Khan. This leads Julian to clash with agents of an unknown power – and they may or may not be human. His only clue is grainy footage, showing a woman who supposedly died on Bodmin Moor.

Dr Khan’s research was theoretical; then she found cracks between our world and parallel Earths. Now these cracks are widening, revealing extraordinary creatures. And as the doors crash open, anything could come through.

“Tchaikovsky weaves a masterful tale… a suspenseful joyride through the multiverse.” (Booklist)

The Silver Coin, Horror Anthology Series, Coming In April

UPCOMING HORROR ANTHOLOGY SERIES
THE SILVER COIN RICH IN TALENT

PORTLAND, Ore. 01/22/2021 — Eisner Award winning artist Michael Walsh (Star Wars, Black Hammer/Justice League) will team up with an all-star lineup of collaborators—Chip Zdarsky (Stillwater), Kelly Thompson (Sabrina the Teenage Witch), Ed Brisson (Old Man Logan), and Jeff Lemire (Gideon Falls)—in The Silver Coin. This ongoing horror anthology series will launch from Image Comics this April.

Each issue of The Silver Coin will tell a tale of terror in a shared supernatural world interwoven with common characters and overlapping stories. The series begins in 1978 with a failing rock band whose fortune suddenly changes when they find the mysterious Silver Coin. Little do they know that fame comes with a cost, and a curse is always hungry.

“After finishing Black Hammer/Justice League with Jeff Lemire I was really itching to draw a Horror comic. I was also dying to work with a bunch of my favourite collaborators again AND I was really pushing myself to move back into the world of creator owned comics,” said Walsh in and exclusive scoop on the announcement at IGN. “I thought for a while about how I could make all of these things happen and came up with the idea behind The Silver Coin. A shared world where a bunch of writers can throw amazing and horrific ideas at me to draw the hell out of. I approached a group of writers whose work I not only admired as a fan, but also had a fruitful working collaboration with in the past. Everyone signed up for this simple idea... A Coin rolls through time causing supernatural horror to all those that find it. That story prompt grew and evolved into something truly unexpected. As each script came in the world grew into something bigger and more connected... I can't WAIT for readers to find out where this is going and what we have in store for them.”

Zdarsky told IGN: "This was incredibly fun to work on. Michael is such a talented artist with a real eye for horror, I’m pretty stunned with what he was able to do with my story. It’s incredibly creepy.

“It was really great being able to do these side by side with the other writers. Because we all started with the same basic premise and are working with Michael on art, it’s the perfect way to determine which of us is the best writer by comparing our final stories. Which means we’ve all brought our A-game for fear of looking bad by comparison. Which means YOU, the READER, truly wins out!"

The Silver Coin #1 Cover A by Walsh (Diamond Code FEB210045), The Silver Coin #1 Cover B by Tula Lotay, and The Silver Coin #1 Cover C by Maria Nguyen will be available at comic book shops on Wednesday, April 7.

The Silver Coin #1 will also be available for purchase across many digital platforms, including Amazon Kindle, Apple Books, comiXology, and Google Play.

Home Launching in April from Image Comics

COMIC BOOK SERIES HOME TO EXPLORE US IMMIGRATION POLICY & BORDER PATROL THROUGH SUPERHUMAN LENS
PORTLAND, Ore. 01/22/2021 — Debut creators Julio Anta (Frontera, forthcoming HarperCollins 2023) and Anna Wieszczyk weave a deeply grounded and heartfelt story in the forthcoming comic book Home. This five-issue miniseries will explore the real-world implications of a migrant with extraordinary powers, and will launch from Image Comics in April.

Home follows a young boy who is torn away from his mother while seeking asylum at the U.S. border, just as something begins to change in him. He doesn’t know it yet, but it’s the onset of superhuman abilities that will change his life forever.

“As the son and grandson of Cuban and Colombian immigrants, and now a parent myself, the news of the governments family separation policy both broke my heart, and filled me with anger,” said Anta in an exclusive scoop on the announcement at The Hollywood Reporter. “Home is an attempt to channel those complicated feelings about what it means to be an American into a story about empowered Latinx characters dealing with the cruelty of our modern immigration laws."

Valenza told THR: "I rarely get the opportunity to color cartoon-inspired art like Anna's. It’s been a joy to use colors to balance her stylized work with the serious subject matter of Julio’s story. Working on Home has been a challenging experience that I’m so happy to be involved in."

"It was a pleasure working on the book with Julio [Anta]. He has a very defined artistic vision for the story and it was an enjoyable experience to be a part of this journey," said Wieszczyk to THR.

Home #1 will be available at comic book shops on Wednesday, April 14.

Home #1 will also be available for purchase across many digital platforms, including Amazon Kindle, Apple Books, comiXology, and Google Play.
